DeConstructing the Sekuatean Empire, Part 1

For years now I have been promising to explain the Deconstruction of the Sekuatean Empire. Some people, of course, have weathered the threat; others, languish forever in anticipation. That seems needlessly cruel.  There just seldom seems a good time for it. However, I wonder if today might be the day.... Hmm, let's see....

All right, let's go for it!

Once upon a time--well, back in July 1975, at least--a doorway was discovered at an abandoned quarry deep in the woods on the east side of the Kansas City, Missouri area. That much we know--unless you believe conspiracy theorists who declare that information is being hidden from the general public. On that evening, according to official reports, two young people (identified in court documents as Sebastian E. Talbot and Gina A. Parton, ages 18 and 20 respectively, recent graduates of a local high school) were conducting an experiment in ultra-high-frequency sonic detonation of quantum reflectors (no doubt for their personal amusement) and through their efforts became aware of the phenomena: a fluctuation of the molecules in the air at the center of the quarry's open arena.

It is not clear who went first but both moved through what they later described as an "opening" or "slit" in the air, leading them to a place that was not anywhere on Earth. A crude journal was kept of their adventures in that otherworldly location. From descriptions contained therein, we now know that the other world was quite an ordinary planet existing in another solar system within our own Milky Way galaxy. It was an inhabited planet, and possessed an intricate civilization. Mr. Talbot has called it "seductive" and "addicting." After 127 days there, Mr. Talbot was able to return through what he called the "tear in the universe" while his partner, Ms. Parton, chose to remain. Aside from issues of romantic fidelity which provided lingering consequences, Mr. Talbot found himself eventually returning for his own separate adventures--during which he occasionally crossed paths with his ex-girlfriend, Ms. Parton.

It soon became apparent to Mr. Talbot that traveling interdimensionally could have detrimental effects on his mind and body. One confusing aspect of the effort was that while he might spend months or even years in that other dimension, on that other world, upon his return to Earth he would discover that only days or weeks had passed. Hence, he suffered mental lapses of time and place. On the other world he would seem to not age. He described how Ms. Parton was able to experience extended lifespan, as well. As Mr. Talbot attempted to complete his college education at a university in Missouri, his weekend trips to the other world caused severe interruption in normal development and, many say, initiated a downward spiral into madness.

Many have questioned whether or not the phenomena Mr. Talbot experienced was a true cosmic anomaly or the paranoid-schizophrenic ramblings of a psychotic killer. Killer? Some people wonder if his accounts were true or if they were cover-ups for murder. First Ms. Parton goes missing, then his friend Jason. Later, in the mid-1980s, other people disappeared. His explanation? They chose to stay there on that world, in that dimension. Law enforcement authorities have yet to find a single body. With one exception: co-worker Kenneth J. Davenport's body was found on the sidewalk outside Mr. Talbot's apartment, the stomach apparently ruptured by what one forensic scientist described as a "laser" blast.

Mr. Talbot immediately dropped out of sight and authorities continue to maintain surveillance on locations he is known to frequent. A few people, seemingly with inside knowledge, believe he has returned through that "tangent" doorway and even now hides there. They believe he has made his residence in the city of SelauĂȘ in the political unit known as the Sekuatean Empire--formerly the nation of Sekuate, divided between a northern and southern portion, united after revolution and civil war, expanded through military action to form a large empirical entity bent on world domination. He remains vigilant there, watching his back, waiting for an opportunity to bring down the empire.

We can only hope Mr. Talbot (using the name Set-d'Elous) will succeed, lest the forces of the Sekuatean Empire march through the doorway and conquer Missouri, then all of America!

Bigger is not always better!

FYI* THE DREAM LAND will appear first as an ebook, so a short clever blurb for the back cover won't be necessary right away. Because...guess what? There is no back cover for ebooks.

Previously I offered a pair of query-length blurbs which sought to provide more of an overview of the story for the benefit of an agent, editor, or publisher (please contact me, you know you want to!). They (the blurbs; not the agents, editors, or publishers) were much too long to be used for a back cover. The back cover blurb is intended only to pique interest in reading inside--possibly with a hint there may be a $20 note hidden between a couple of the pages. So in this case, less is more and bigger is not better.

And so, with your kind indulgence, allow me to offer these quick and dirty versions:

Tangent #1

How far would you go to save the love of your life? Through a portal to another world?

Sebastian, the quiet tax examiner at the corner desk in the IRS service center, carries a dark secret: once upon a time he and his high school sweetheart Gina found a rip in the universe and stepped through to a strange world of magical beauty.

The world of Ghoupallesz bursts with cosmopolitan elegance, alien perversions, and political strife--and Gina is drawn to the adventures that await. When Sebastian insists they need to return to Earth, Gina refuses and he goes back alone, vowing never to return.

Then the headaches revisit him and he knows she is in trouble again, calling him from across the cosmos. He must, as always, save her. Maybe this time, he hopes, she will stay with him.

But are his adventures to the other side real? Or are they just the dreams of a psychotic killer? That’s what the police want to know when people go missing!

Tangent #2

How far would you go to save the love of your life? Through a portal to another world?

As high school sweethearts, Sebastian and Gina discover a portal to a new world. Adventure-loving Gina falls in love with the world of Ghoupallesz and wants to stay, but studious Sebastian fears losing touch with Earth and so he returns alone. But late one night, Sebastian feels the cosmic pull once more. Gina is in trouble again. Of course he must return and save her! Perhaps this time, he hopes, they can remain together.

Returning through the interdimensional portal, Sebastian must first gather his old comrades from the wars, cross the towering Zet mountains, and free Gina from the evil Zetin warlord’s castle. Unfortunately, Sebastian finds there are more questions needing answers. Is his adventure on the other side real? Or is it just the dream of a psychotic killer? That’s what the police want to know when his co-workers turn up dead.

And a few so-called nutshell book descriptions:

Tangent 2-A

THE DREAM LAND is an epic of interdimensional intrigue and world domination by a pair of well-meaning hedonists, marbled through with twisted humor and steampunk pathos, a patina of psychological thriller, and the quirky conundrums of time and space.

Tangent 2-B

THE DREAM LAND is a psychological thriller masquerading as a science-fiction epic of interdimensional intrigue, featuring two nerdy adventurers and marbled with twisted humor, steampunk pathos, and the quirky conundrums of time and space.

Tangent 2-C

THE DREAM LAND is like Stieg Larson meets Roger Zelazny and they discuss Dostoevsky over milk and cookies: a crime thriller crossed with dimension-crashing adventure, mixed with twisted morality plays that cut through the heart of the human condition, with a joke on top.

So.... Thoughts? Complaints? Questions? Lunch money? Spare keys? Chocolate?

*Some people think FYI means "For Your Information"; others, however, swear it means "Friday's Youthful Intoxication"--rather common on college campuses. I have also heard FYI means "Free Yemeni Internet" which has been the cause of much strive and most likely the reason sales of my desert adventure AFTER ILIUM have been so low there.

To Blurb or Not to Blurb...Which is Better?

My attempt at a suitable cover.
The actual cover will likely be done by a real artist.
Oh, dear! It's almost that time. I've been hesitant for the longest time but it seems the planets are about to align. Hell is also growing much colder, so ice is possible. Therefore, the launch of my sci-fi trilogy, THE DREAM LAND, Book I: Long Distance Voyager, appears imminent--that is to say, slightly more real than a mirage on the twisted lip of some monstrous sand dune!

I need some help picking an appropriate blurb. Something to get people to put down everything else in their lives and read this sci-fi adventure tale cover to cover over the course of, say, a week. But NOT give away any spoilers, of course. Enough but not too much. Get the idea? I knew you would understand.

Let me present for your head-scratching pleasure, these two candidates:

#1

(This was used in Amazon.com's Breakthrough Novel Award competition and it got me through the first round.)

Sebastian, that quiet tax examiner at the corner desk in the IRS service center, carries a dark secret: once upon a time he and his high school sweetheart Gina found a rip in the universe and stepped through it to a strange world of magical beauty.

Far from being a Disney-esque playground, the world of Ghoupallesz bursts with cosmopolitan elegance, alien perversions, and political strife. Gina, the adventurous one, falls in love with the adventurous possibilities. Not Sebastian; always practical, he insists they return to Earth. Gina refuses so he goes back alone, vowing never to return. Yet he finds himself drawn back repeatedly--he calls it “research”--and often crosses paths with Gina. Sometimes he saves her, sometimes she saves him, forever soul mates.

Now years later, life on Earth hasn’t gone well for Sebastian. Then the headaches revisit him, with flashes of memories from Ghoupallesz. Gina is in trouble again, he senses, and he must, as always, save her. Meanwhile, a pair of too-curious IRS co-workers have accidently overdosed on the Elixir of Love he brought back on his last trip and the antidote exists only on Ghoupallesz. With these co-workers in tow, Sebastian returns through the interdimensional portal, fearing it may be his final adventure. He must gather his old comrades from the war, cross the towering Zet mountains, and free Gina from the Zetin warlord’s castle before her execution. Perhaps then she will stay with him.

But are his adventures to the other side real? Or are they just the dreams of a psychotic killer? That’s what the police want to know when Sebastian returns without his co-workers.

THE DREAM LAND is a genre-mashing epic of interdimensional intrigue and police procedural, a psychological thriller marbled with twisted humor, steampunk pathos, and time/space conundrums.

#2

How far would you go to save the love of your life? Through a portal to another world?

High school sweethearts Sebastian and Gina discover a portal and step through to a world of magical beauty. Gina falls in love with it and stays while Sebastian fears losing touch with Earth and returns. Even so, he is repeatedly drawn back for nefarious adventures, like an addiction, often to save Gina from sordid relationships. Their relationship as soul mates evolves over the hundreds of years spent playing on their adopted home of Ghoupallesz.

From the I.R.S. service center’s night shift, Sebastian feels the pull of Gina in trouble once more. It’s been a while, so he is hesitant to step through that portal, his head still filled with the traumas of previous journeys: his relationship with a Ghoupalle woman andhis role in a military invasion force as regimental commander. So this time, he enlists two co-workers, themselves needing a place to escape thanks to drinking the Ghoupalle “elixir of love” he accidentally left out.

Sebastian must save Gina—again. Perhaps this time, he hopes, they can remain together, finally be a family. Returning through the portal, he must first gather his old comrades from the war, cross the Zet mountains, and free Gina from the Zetin warlord’s castle. Unfortunately, Sebastian finds more questions to be answered. Is his adventure to the other side real, or is it just the dream of a psychotic killer? That’s what the police want to know when he returns without his co-workers.

THE DREAM LAND is an epic of interdimensional intrigue and world domination by a pair of well-meaning hedonists, marbled through with twisted humor andsteampunk pathos, a patina of psychological thriller, and the quirky conundrums of time and space.

Now it's time for you to weigh in on which blurb you prefer. Or perhaps a hybrid is your choice; if so, please advise. Many thanks for your vote!
